IT International Telecom returned to VARD for a conversion

The conversion of IT Infinity demonstrates VARD's expertise in delivering complex retrofit projects through our integrated value chain. Originally built as a Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) at Vard Brattvaag in 2008, the vessel has been transformed into a cutting-edge Cable-Laying Vessel (CLV) to meet the demands of the growing subsea telecommunications market. This project highlights VARD’s capabilities in ship repair, conversion, and technological upgrades, supported by seamless collaboration across our Norwegian shipyards and specialized subsidiaries.

01

The challenge

The task was to convert an existing PSV into a highly specialized Cable-Laying Vessel (CLV), capable of handling modern submarine cable installation and maintenance operations. The challenge involved significant structural modifications, installation of advanced cable-handling equipment, and upgrading the vessel’s electrical systems to meet the industry’s latest standards. The project required close coordination across disciplines and precise execution to ensure on-time delivery and operational excellence.

It Infinity

02

What we did

VARD carried out extensive structural modifications, including new accommodations for 32 personnel and the addition of 550 tons of steel. Vard Electro upgraded the vessel’s electrical systems with new switchboards, cabling, and system updates, while Vard Interiors delivered a modern HVAC system. Leveraging the seamless collaboration between VARD’s three Norwegian yards — Vard Langsten, Vard Søviknes, and Vard Brattvaag — the project was executed efficiently, preparing the vessel for the integration of advanced cable-handling equipment and an upgraded DP2 Class station-keeping system.

VARD were with us every step of the way throughout the conversion of IT Infinity. The result is an extremely capable asset fully prepared to serve the global subsea telecommunications market.
