VARD has designed, built and delivered four vessels, three of VARD 4 12 design and one VARD 4 19 design, purpose-built for the demanding environments of the North Sea and Dogger Bank wind farm.

From concept to reality: a fully integrated solution

North Star’s operational expertise combined with VARD’s integrated value chain has resulted in vessels that meet rigorous performance and sustainability criteria. VARD’s role extended beyond design to include the construction and full integration of cutting-edge systems and equipment. This comprehensive approach ensured that every element of the vessels was optimized for North Star’s specific needs and the operational challenges of offshore wind operations.

Collaboration is key

James Bradford, Chief Technology Officer at North Star, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving this success:

“To develop and deliver a successful vessel, collaboration and engagement with our needs as a company, along with those of our client portfolio, is extremely important.”

Through continuous innovation and responsiveness to operational feedback, VARD has fine-tuned its designs and construction processes to deliver vessels that lead the industry in efficiency and reliability.

Innovations driving operational excellence

The VARD 4 12 and VARD 4 19 vessels integrate advanced features that enhance operational efficiency and crew well-being, including:

  • Hull form optimization: Improved hydrodynamics for reduced fuel consumption and increased speed.
  • Advanced propulsion systems: Energy-efficient solutions, including Voith propulsion and Rolls Royce thrusters, that reduce emissions and ensure reliability.
  • Comfort class accommodations: Designed to minimize noise and vibration, creating a tranquil and productive living environment.
  • Passive stabilization and AI-driven decision support systems: Enhancing safety and operational efficiency even in harsh North Sea conditions.
  • Ergonomic design and redundancy: Simplified interaction with systems, easy access to equipment, and failsafe operations.

Bradford highlights the critical role of innovation:

Each version of the VARD design has been enhanced and better able to satisfy North Star, client needs, and offshore performance expectations.”

Building for well-being

The enhanced crew and technician accommodations reflect a commitment to supporting physical and mental well-being. Featuring single cabins and hotel-quality amenities, these vessels redefine offshore living.

“Providing a comfortable environment is crucial for the well-being of our crews and service personnel, allowing them to perform their duties effectively,” says Bradford.

Key design features include ultra-low noise and vibration levels, carefully selected color schemes to enhance mental health, and spaces designed for relaxation. These elements create an atmosphere conducive to rest and recovery, ensuring the crew is ready to tackle demanding offshore operations.

Reliability in delivery and execution

VARD’s proven expertise has been instrumental in ensuring the construction and delivery of all four vessels in this series. Not only were they delivered on schedule, but several were also completed ahead of time, showcasing VARD’s commitment to reliability and excellence.

Bradford has nothing but praise for VARD’s project execution: “Delivery on time is an expectation so that we can plan and deliver to our client. VARD stepped up to the plate, delivering ahead of time on every occasion.”

Early delivery provided North Star with critical advantages, such as additional time for real-world testing, operational fine-tuning, and seamless integration into the Dogger Bank wind farm project timeline.

A collaboration built on trust

Reflecting on the partnership, Bradford described it as “exceptional”:

“We are a team, even though we are two separate companies. Through listening, defining needs, and effective collaboration, we’ve turned requirements into a material reality that delivers exceptional service.”

Setting a new standard for offshore wind vessels

With the delivery of the final vessel, Grampian Tweed, this series reflects the success of a holistic approach that combines design, construction, and equipment integration. North Star and VARD have not only delivered world-class vessels but have also set a benchmark for collaboration, innovation, and operational excellence in the offshore wind sector.

For both companies, this project underscores their shared commitment to driving progress and enabling sustainable operations at sea.
